|Empower Youth -- Learn, Paddle & Preserve|
Through a grant, the ACA partnered with Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, the Charleston County School District, the Baptist Hill Community Education Program, and Half-Moon Outfitters to provide an Outdoor Nation Paddle Nation Project to a group of seventh grade students from rural Charleston County.
Entitled "Empowering Youth--Learn, Paddle, Serve," this 2-day program provided in-class stewardship activities to educate students about pollution that threatens our waterways, on-water demonstrations and lessons to build paddling confidence and comfort on the water, and the opportunity for students to put all their lessons into practice during a 6-mile paddle of the Edisto River.
The students participating in this project were all from around the Edisto River and, prior to the Outdoor Nation program, did not know how to swim. By the end of the project, the students were all swimming with their lifejackets on at Givhans Ferry State Park, and were much more comfortable on the water.
The core focus of this program was to provide instruction and on-water experiences to students that might not have otherwise had the opportunity. By combining stewardship education and lessons relevant to the rivers paddled, the ACA strives to create new advocates for clean water and healthy rivers with every new set of hands on a paddle!
Thank you to all of our amazing partners who worked to help make this program possible!
